I'm always telling people on my forum to read. Read all posts in a thread. Read the FAQs. read my lips, "No new taxes." Well, I'm going to tell you all again, but this time I'm talking about recreational reading.
First off, you have to enjoy reading a good story to appreciate this. So if you've read Stephen King, stumbled through the Harry Potter series, or got inspired by the films and actually read some Tolkien, read on.
Some of the best books I've ever read are written by Orson Scott Card. His "Ender Saga" is a story stretched across seven rather hefty tomes with more on the way. It's hard to really describe the books all at once, so I'll break them down:
Ender's Game
This book is the first in the series and introduces many of the main characters. The book stands on its own and is completely self-contained. It concentrates on Ender's character as he develops and doesn't take on the broader topics of humanity and philosophy as the others do. Still, a good place to start and a good book in its own right.
This is a sci-fi series, but not nerdy sci-fi. It's like well written Star Trek. The story is universal and only the setting is different because it's in the future.

Xenocide
Children of the Mind
These three books are essentially one story broken into three acts. You need to read them in order to understand them, and re-read them to really appreciate the story elements. There's just way too much going on.
Ender's Shadow
Shadow of the Hegemon
Shadow Puppets
These books are interesting because of the direction they go in. The first book parallels Ender's Game but follows a secondary character fron that book. The second two books continue this side-story. Good stories, but not as good as the others. Read these last.
I've pretty much told you nothing about the books. That was my intention. Just start reading. Trust me. They're good.
